baby foxes

The culvert is right on the busy highway and they are within inches of the cars, but they are growing up and surviving. I sat on the guard rail and a baby fox came out of the woods two feet away and ran for the den. I sat patiently and took photos of one baby retrieving a dropped rabbit foot from the driveway. They seem aware of traffic, and this is the second year the mother has made a den in a culvert on a busy highway. Maybe it avoids coyotes and there may be some upside to making fox babies so familiar with highways, although it looks very dangerous to me.
